7 Wild GTA Facts That Will Blow Your Mind
Updated June 27, 2026
You've played hundreds of hours of GTA. But how much do you actually know about the wild history behind the series? Here are seven facts that even hardcore fans often get wrong — or have never heard at all.
1. GTA III Literally Invented the Genre in 2001
Before GTA III dropped in October 2001, fully 3D open-world crime games simply did not exist. The original GTA was a top-down 2D game. Rockstar's leap to a fully navigable 3D Liberty City was so jarring that many reviewers didn't know how to score it. It went on to sell over 14 million copies and became the blueprint every open-world game since has followed — from Assassin's Creed to The Witcher to Cyberpunk 2077.
2. Vice City Was Designed to Be a Playable Scarface
Rockstar's team was deeply obsessed with 1980s Miami culture — especially Scarface (1983) and Miami Vice — when designing GTA Vice City. They deliberately set the game in 1986, sourced the entire soundtrack from the era, and even modeled Tommy Vercetti's arc on Tony Montana. Ray Liotta voiced Tommy, and a version of the Scarface mansion appears as a major story location. The 80s vibe wasn't nostalgia — it was the entire design brief.
3. GTA V Cost More to Make Than Most Marvel Movies
GTA V's development budget is estimated at around $265 million, with another $128 million spent on marketing — totaling roughly $393 million before a single copy was sold. At the time of its 2013 launch, that made it one of the most expensive entertainment products ever produced. For comparison, the original Iron Man (2008) cost $140 million. Rockstar recovered the investment in three days, eventually making GTA V the best-selling entertainment title of all time.
More facts you didn't know
- GTA San Andreas's map (2004) was so vast it remained the largest GTA world for over a decade — not surpassed until Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018.
- GTA IV's Liberty City was so faithfully recreated from New York that Rockstar sent research teams to photograph the city block-by-block for months.
- GTA Online was conceived as a separate, standalone product before being folded into GTA V — which is why the worlds are nearly identical but built on slightly different tech.
- Red Dead Redemption 2 required actors to record dialogue in the correct chronological scene order to preserve authentic emotional performances — an almost unheard-of production constraint in gaming.
